How to Avoid Car Problems

Nobody's perfect, and that includes your car. While you may do everything you can to take care of it, sometimes Murphy's Law strikes and something goes wrong. Here are some of the most common car problems and some steps you can take to prevent them. Knowing what to watch out for and being proactive about taking care of your car can help keep your car running smoothly.

Dead Battery

Your car not only needs gas, but electricity to keep it running. If your car battery dies, make sure it is adequately charged. If it is not, you can cheaply get it recharged at a battery or auto shop. It is recommended that you replace the battery about every 2-5 years, depending on your local weather conditions, general everyday use, and vehicle condition.

In extreme weather conditions, such as sweltering heat or frigid temperatures, car batteries can kick into overdrive, working much harder than at average temperatures. In the hotter parts of the year, you will want to check that the plastic pieces are well preserved and have not melted or cracked.

Tire Blowout

Extreme temperatures in the summer and winter can negatively affect your tires, causing them to become over or under-inflated. When the temperature and/or humidity changes, you must note a warning signal on your dashboard alerting you that there is a pressure issue with your tires. After locating your valve stem, you can check your tire pressure with a tire air pressure gauge.

You can simply release some air through the valve stem if it is overinflated. If they are underinflated, a quick trip to your local gas station's air pump can get you back on the road with minimal fuss. However, suppose there is a leak or a piece of debris stuck in your tire (such as glass or nails). In that case, getting your car to a specialist is crucial so they can make the proper repairs before your tire has a dangerous blowout potentially causing a car accident.

Brake Problems

It is important to check your braking system regularly to maintain safe driving conditions. The simplest way of doing this, which will cost minimal time and money in repairs, is checking to ensure enough brake fluid is in the reservoir. It is also important to regularly check your braking system by seeing if the brake pads or calipers are due for replacement.

Inefficient Windshield Wipers

If you get caught in a storm, the state of your windshield wipers can cause low visibility, hindering your ability to drive safely in dangerous conditions. Changing your windshield wiper blades once every six months will ensure you stay protected from the elements.

Oil Consumption

It is essential to keep your car running smoothly by following the factory's recommended time frame for oil changes for your particular car and model. This will extend its lifespan and help avoid costly repairs down the road.

Make sure only to use factory-specified parts and fluids when making repairs and replacements on your car. Using non-compatible parts can lead to problems such as a buildup of valve gunk or even more severe engine problems down the road. If you're worried about any concerns regarding your oil, consult with a professional right away!
