Vehicle Checks Before Vacation

Jul 08, 2019
It’s finally summer vacation. You and your family have been carefully planning a road trip that you’ll remember for years to come. You’ve got everything packed for the long ride, and are loading up your car. Not long after, you start your adventure. You’ve got the windows down, the music blaring, and everything is good...until it’s not. You’re just a few miles out on the road when your car breaks down.

Obviously, the whole family is crushed. You have to put your exciting vacation on hold because of car trouble. Wouldn’t it have been nice to know that your car would give you grief? Luckily, there are things that you can do to make sure that this never happens.

Let’s rewind back to when you were loading up all of your essentials into the car. Yeah, don’t do that. Before you even think about packing up your vehicle for the long trip ahead, there are some regular car maintenance services that you need to be caught up on. Grab a pen and some gloves, because this road trip checklist might get messy.

Make sure that you’ve got all of these marked off before you put those miles on your car. If you do everything below, you won’t have any surprises pop up down the road.
  • Check the oil and oil filter, and change as needed
  • Check the air filter, and change as needed
  • Check the spark plugs, and change as needed
  • Check your spare tire
  • Look at your tires, and check the tire pressure on each. Are there any flats? Is the tread worn-down?
  • Check your wipers and wiper fluid, and change as needed
  • Check your coolant levels, and change as needed
  • Has your radiator been flushed recently? It’s recommended to do this every 30,000 miles.
  • Check all of the car’s fuses and the horn
  • Check that your high and low beam headlights are working, as well as your brake lights.
  • Check your power steering and brake fluid
  • Check your car’s heater and AC
It might seem like there’s a lot to do, but all of this can be marked off during your packing period. It’s good to walk away from your suitcase and use the breathing time to mark off some of these important car maintenance items. When you get back to packing, you’ll be going in with a clear head and be able to see something you might have otherwise missed.
